Canon EOS 200D in the test: Not only for DSLR beginners

You want to photograph more professionally than with your smartphone? A DSLR must finally come from? Then the Canon EOS 200D could be the right choice for you. But not only beginners or translators from the smartphone can feel comfortable with the compact SLR camera right away, as our test shows.

At the end of June, Canon left the cat out of the sack – and presented the EOS 6D Mark II. While the large reflex camera with full-format sensor and an entry price of 2099 euros but rather not aimed at newcomers in photography, the model presented at the same time looks different.

Granted, with its 630 euros, the Canon EOS 200D is not a bargain. Certain ambitions for DSLR photography should therefore already be present. The price, however, is roughly comparable to that of a top-class smartphone. Why not cut the smartphone and invest in a really good camera? How good and easy to get into the EOS 200D is what we have tested under the microscope.

Design & Handling: The smallest DSLR from Canon

Compared to its predecessor, the EOS 100D, it has grown somewhat. And yet, the EOS 200D is also one of the most compact and lightest DSLR models on the market. With dimensions of 122.4 x 92.6 x 69.8 millimeters it could almost go through as a system camera. The overall dimensions and the overall weight depend, of course, on the lens you use. Fits more than 80 EF and EF-S interchangeable lenses. In the test, the kit with EF-S 18-55mm 1: 4-5.6 IS STM was available to us. But also with the lens, the Canon camera is still very good in the hand. This is thanks to the new and now slightly larger handle.

In contrast to Canon’s professional models, the case does not feel quite as high-quality. Thanks to its aluminum alloy chassis and a glass fiber reinforcement for the plastic parts, the EOS 200D should also be robust enough for regular outdoor use. The controls also leave a good impression, the wheels can be rotated perfectly and the buttons have a clear pressure point. Nothing wobbles or rattles. The rotatable and swivel-mounted display – a further innovation compared to the EOS 100D – also sits firmly and clearly locks into certain positions. By the way: The Canon EOS 200D is the world’s lightest SLR camera with a display that can be turned and swiveled.

Display: Rotating & swiveling touch screen for smartphone feeling

Thus the small DSLR collects plus points in terms of handling. Those who like to shoot freely from the hand – and sometimes from unusual perspectives, will certainly enjoy this feature. The 3-inch display with a 100 percent field coverage is also designed as a touch screen and makes DSLR entry-level users the transition from smartphone photography particularly easy. The tapping on the display can be used not only for focusing, but also directly for triggering. The EOS 200D is even surprisingly fast for a SLR camera. In live-view mode, the DSLR uses Canon’s well-known dual-pixel CMOS AF system to focus, according to the manufacturer, the fastest live-view autofocus system.

For fans of classic photography, an optical viewfinder is also on board. This provides approximately 95% image coverage, diopter compensation and a 9-point autofocus, only the middle of which is designed as a cross sensor. The viewfinder displays the most important information such as AF points, exposure and flash data.

Operation: Easy & intuitive menu navigation

With its features, the Canon EOS 200D is aimed at professionals who are looking for a second compact DSLR, as well as for beginners who buy their first SLR camera. This is also to mark the menu of the camera. While Canon connoisseurs are likely to be right, there are helpful explanations for the beginners in the Cameramenüs. These do not not overcharge and provide useful help with which to find the right mode and the correct setting for the particular photo situation.

The main control element is the mode dial which provides the selection between various automatic, semi-automatic manual and scene programs. In addition, there are a number of different creativity filters, such as portraits with background blur, photos of food, miniature effects or various HDR modes. In the case of the latter, three images with different exposure settings are recorded and superimposed. You can find the video mode as an additional point on the on / off switch.

The inner life: New sensor, new processor

New is not only the rotatable and swivelable display of the Canon EOS 200D. The new features of the EOS 100D include the 24.2 megapixel CMOS sensor in the APS-C format as well as the more expensive EOS models such as the 800D known DIGIC-7 image processor. This now allows a series of five frames per second, the predecessor could only four. The innovations promise not only an increase in speed, but also advances in image quality. The light sensitivity of the entry-level DSLR ranges from ISO 100 to ISO 25,600, while filming up to ISO 12,800. The shutter speeds range from 1/4000 second to 30-second long exposure.

Image quality: Small DSLR for great moments

The pictures of the Canon EOS 200D can be seen proverbially. The compact DSLR does not have to hide behind more expensive and larger models again due to their technology update EOS 77D or EOS 800D. With the automatic mode, absolute photo-laymen can shoot impressive, detailed pictures with a high dynamic range. With the scene programs, the appropriate settings for sports recordings, backlight scenarios or portraits are available at the same time. The EOS 200D then automatically shoots with background blur and draws the skin softer.

The EOS 200D can deliver full HD resolution at up to 60 fps. 4K does not exist, but that did not even have the same announced cam EOS 6D Mark II. While the picture quality of the videos is nothing to complain about, the AI servo mode, which is to tracked objects automatically, is a bit difficult to shoot. The best way to do this is when the objects stand out clearly from the background and move in foreseeable patterns. With the small drone filmed in the test, for example, the autofocus had its problems. In such a case, another mode should be used for focusing.

Quickly shared: Smartphone connectivity via Bluetooth, WLAN, NFC

Photographed with the DSLR, but then posted often however over the cell phone. And so that also fits quickly and smoothly, the EOS 200D has Bluetooth, WLAN and NFC on board. To send pictures quickly to the smartphone and share it from there or use the phone as a remote control for the camera, you have to download the free Canon Camera Connect app from your app store. The first-time pairing with a Galaxy S7 worked the fastest by NFC. To connect the devices later, simply press the WLAN button in the upper left corner of the camera and connect your smartphone to the EOS network. The download of the pictures works surprisingly fast, the fixed parts via Facebook or Instagram is nothing to prevent.

Battery life: Realistic manufacturer specifications

We can not complain about the battery life. In the test with regular switching on and off of the camera about 230 photos, almost predominantly in the live view mode and a little more than ten video clips with a Akkuladung. This is roughly equivalent to what Canon promises. According to the data sheet, up to 260 images can be recorded in the live view mode and up to 650 images can be viewed with the viewfinder. Charge is the battery in the included charger then synonymous quite fast again. In addition, of course, numerous settings can be made in the camera for energy saving.
